With the casting of an older Doctor things feel that they could be moving in the right direction at last. Peter Capaldi has the chance to play the Doctor straighter ; as an authority figure who nonetheless cares about his companions, has principles above and beyond the personal and cares about the world/worlds. Not everything was perfect about the Pertwee era ; the relationship with Jo Grant was overly chauvanistic, the special effects were primitive and some of the scripts had padding. However this is a chance to rectify those problems while still returning to what was great about the era. I'd say that Capaldi's Doctor could start with a new companion or better still companions. Maybe a professional woman in the Liz Shaw mould along with a young, slightly inexperienced male companion would work. Someone like Michelle Collins (maybe younger?) for the female and Aneuirin Barnard for the male. UNIT could be brought back on a more regular basis with maybe Jo/Katy Manning making the occasional appearance as special adviser. Also I think Moffat should wind up all his old plot arcs rapidly, the last thing Capaldi's Doctor needs is to be carrying on and dragging out boring old plot threads from the previous Doctor , in particular no more River Song please!!!! Ever!!!!
