On the surface, the terms geek, nerd, anorak and anal, often levelled at whovians, encapsulate the same essential features and qualities. However close evaluation of said descriptive terms reveals a plethera of subtle, yet definite, and clear, yet permeating, differences. Below is a written elucidation, indeed definition, of each term. Which if any encapsulates yourself? Please use the 'best fit' model.
GEEK
The classic geek has an obsessive, pedantic interest in computers and the inner workings of mechanical devices. Classic occupations include computer programmer and software developers. Geeks are often expert mathmaticians. They love numbers. The classic geek can also be obsessed with cataloguing, indexing and compiling lists. The geeky fan will have a fully indexed library of Whovian works with everything stored neatly in the right order and the right place.
NERD
The nerd differs from the geek in that he can be very untidy. He has an obsessive interest in all things Doctor Who to the point of shunning non-whovian society. He is socially akward and prefers the company of his books & DVDs. The nerd will generally scrape a living doing a cleaning job or some part time work in order to avoid detracting from Whovian research.
ANORAK
The anorak looks down on the nerd and up to the geek. His whovian obsession enables him to build a wide social network but largely consisting of other whovians. He lacks the geek's technical abilities however unlike the geek the anorak can be a very talented writer. He produces fiction and whovian analysis writings. The anorak is bespectacled.
ANAL
The classic anal fan is obsessed with minutai and pedantic with detail. Unlike the geek he tends not to obsess over technology and concentrates more on facts. Can name every support actor to have appeared in the classic series and every part they played. Is a walking dictionary. More successful than the nerd and more knowledgable than the anorak, the anal fan is probably either a librarian or a writer of encyclopedias.
